| "Backyard Vegetable Gardening" course being offered at the Oxford Public Library, 48 South Second Street, Oxford, PA during the first four Saturdays in October from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm. Course fee: $25. No gardening experience necessary.
Successful vegetable gardens dont just happen in the spring; they begin in the fall. So if youve ever thought about growing fresh, delicious, healthful vegetables at home, this course is for you. It will prepare you to: grow much of the food you need, have it ready for harvest when you need it, preserve enough to get through the winter, and manage the entire effort efficiently by spreading tasks out over the entire year. Topics covered will include: choosing and preparing a garden site; creating and maintaining a productive soil; becoming familiar with crop nutrient needs and successful regional varieties; developing an individualized planting schedule; employing various seed-starting methods; adapting solar appliances; using rainwater in drip irrigation systems; making compost; and identifying and dealing with insect pests. The instructor, who has almost 40 years experience growing his own food, has taught his eclectic system in night schools, at the PASA (Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture) annual conference, and at Longwood Gardens. He will discuss many of the lessons he has learned as well as suggest simplified techniques and chemical-free approaches for a wide range of home gardening issues.
