| So why do we get angry?
People get angry when their expectations are not met -- whether those expectations are about the future, about themselves, or about others. When our expectations are unmet, we revert to illusions of control, "unrealistically expecting all people to behave and all situations to turn out as we think they should." Anger over these unmet expectations often leads us to blame others and shift aggression towards them.
There are three main approaches to expressing anger -- expression, suppression, and calming. Expression involves conveying your feelings in an assertive, but not aggressive, manner. This is the best way to handle your anger. However, you must make sure that you are respectful of others and are not being overly demanding or pushy, as this will likely only produce aggression in return.
Referrals: We receive referrals from courts, Human Resource Departments, Employee Assistance Professionals, Mental Health and Substance Abuses Counselors, parents, teachers, spouses, and self referrals.
Services available: Anger Assessment/Evaluations: Comprehensive Emotional Intelligence Assessments are given at intake, focusing on the participant's level of functioning in managing stress, anger, communication and emotional intelligence. We do not provide psychological testing, nor is our intervention considered counseling or psychotherapy. Therefore, there are no stigmas attached.
Workbooks: The adolescence workbook uses graphics and “teen language” to help adolescents identify with the material. Strongly anchored in anger management basics, it helps group facilitators stay focused on practical solutions to anger management and avoid detours. It presents fundamental information about managing anger and stress, developing emotional intelligence, and communicating more effectively. As a workbook, it contains a variety of inventories, exercises, reviews, and logs to help individuals develop alternatives to aggressive behavior.
The adult workbook focuses on the causes of anger and provides alternatives to violent outbursts and abusive behavior through educational lessons that challenge old and inappropriate ways of expressing anger. The lessons in this workbook enable readers to understand the signs and signals that lead them to anger and supplies usable techniques to dissipate that anger before it gets out of control.
Groups: The WECC anger management classes provide education for people who are interested in or who need to learn how to deal with their anger or someone else’s anger in a positive, functional way. Participants may include people who internalize anger as well as those who act it out verbally or behaviorally towards friends, family, work or personal relationships.
Individuals (Private Session): Sessions are available in a private, safe educational setting in order to provide ultimate confidentiality while learning to deal with their anger or someone else’s anger in a positive, functional way.
