| I wanted to to extend this information, until a friend of mine who has been in animal rescue told me, I was unaware.
I understand that these are desperate times and that many people don't have the luxury of time. www.petfinder.com is a place for free ads. A $50 fee is recommended as laboratories may pay more than $20 for a cat or dog.
Please, please ask something for your pets. We don't often hear about it but dog fighting is alive and well in the Akron, cleveland and youngstown area.
Here is a story about some unlucky dogs
"(Akron) I don't know how many of you saw my story or my many posts about my 2 loving dogs, they were taken from me on Friday morning, I looked every where for them from the time that vanished untill I found them last night at 10:40pm laying on the side of the road, alive but not well. I took them to the ER Vet and had to have them put to sleep... Not from the car that had hit them but from the head trauma that some heartless person inflicted on them, My 2 babies were used as bait dogs for fighting and when the spineless person that took them realized that they were not the vicious killers that they thought they were, they Shot my boy in the head and hit my girl with a hammer or something to try and kill them. They failed. I received a phone call from someone that had seen my recent add where I was looking for them, These people helped me find them. I got to them, they tried to get up and come to me, I scooped them up and put them in my van and rushed them to the vet."

"DOGFIGHTING ALIVE IN NORTHEAST OHIO
I doubt there are many proponents of dogfighting reading this column, but if you happen to be one, you would have a hard time denying it attracts the lowest of the low -- the blood-thirsty. So it's an understatement to say that does not put Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick in a good light. We have him to thank, though, for bringing the issue to the fore, because dog fighting and cockfighting are very much alive in Northeast Ohio."
Ohio also has a considerable number of Laboratories that use cats/kittens and dogs/puppies for research.
Please take a moment to consider.
Why "Free To Good Home" Ads Are A Bad Idea!
What Could Happen To An Animal From A "Free To Good Home" Ad?
Used as bait for fighting dogs
Sold to research labs for experiments-Ohio is one of the states with largest group of labs that experiment on animals.
Every year, tens of millions of animals are dissected, infected, injected, gassed, burned and blinded in hidden laboratories on college campuses and research facilities throughout the U.S. Still more animals are used to test the safety of cosmetics, household cleansers and other consumer products. These innocent dogs, cats, rabbits, rodents and other animals are used as research subjects in experiments and procedures that would be considered sadistically cruel were they not conducted in the name of science.
Used as food for snakes
What Is A "Buncher?"
A buncher either steals or "adopts" companion animals for the purpose of selling the animal. Bunchers can sell animals for one or more of the following reasons:
To be used in research labs
To be used as breeding stock in puppy mills or catteries
"Bunchers" can be very deceptive and they prey on people who place "free to good home" ads. They will sometimes use children as part of the ploy and present themselves as a "perfect" family. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
What To Do If You See A "Free To Good Home" Ad
Whether it is in a newspaper or on the Internet, please take a moment to contact the person who is running the ad. Let them know about the dangers of "Free To Good Home" ads and tell them to proceed very carefully with the adoption, including copying identification (driver's license), checking references, performing a home check before the adoption, using a signed adoption contract, and doing follow-ups.
Do not feel embarrassed to contact the person behind the ad. You will find that many people are grateful that you took the time to inform them of dangers they were unaware of.
There are Breed specific rescues, just google if your dog is a pure breed.
There are also rescue groups in Akron that may be able to help. Consider making a donation to help offset costs.
