We are the founder of the Shorkie breed and have been breeding shorkie puppies for 18 years. Shorkies are our expertise. We are Responsible and ethical Shorkie breeders that carefully screens the adults that are being bred for health problems. Health concerns vary from breed to breed and your shorkie puppy is not at less at risk for inheriting them. Information is POWER! get informed and stay informed. Book mark our site! Many breeders do not believe in genetic testing for purebred and or mixed breed dogs. Most of the time it is because they do not want to incur the cost that genetic testing requires. Many breeders will try and discredit genetic testing and tell you they have no genetic issues in the lines of puppies they produce. We have heard it all before! Unfortunately many genetic issues are not seen by a regular vet visit.
Dogs develop bad knees and hips and may not show signs until they are 2 years old. That is why OFA asks breeders to test dogs when they are older and out of the PUPPY stage. The same can be said for the issue of bad knees which is known to both the shih zu and yorkie breed. Heart murmurs may not show up that have been passed on by the parents may not show up until alte on in life. Eye issues can arise and are also known to both the Shih tzu and Yorkie breed. Look up Van willebrands disease a bleeding disorder known to shih tzus. Liver problems affect both breeds. Any breeder that says there are no tests for these things or discredits any form of genetic testing clearly does not want you to know about what testing is available and obviously does not test their own dogs. What good reason would any breeder have NOT to test. When a breeder says genetic testing is not needed what are they really saying. There are vets that are highly trained specialists qualified in detecting problems that are known to these breeds. Why would there be such vets if the problems did not exist. These same breeders will want you to believe in he hybrid vigor theory that says a mixed breed dog is healthier than a purebred. FALSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There are excellent purebreds from excellent purebred breeders and we refuse to say a shorkie puppy is healthier because it is a mix. The hybrid Vigor Theory is a Theory not a Fact! More of a Myth in my opinion Breeds that are recognized today have taken centuries to be developed correctly and many breeders have worked tireless to remove genetic issues from the lines in which they breed. That is our same dedication to the Shorkie as a breed and why we have developed the Shorkie Club of America. We want to develop the shorkie as a recognized breed and do it correctly to weed out all the genetic issues that may exist. But you will always have those who have the mentality of just putting two dogs together will make cute puppies. As cute as the puppies are ... what happens to all puppy parents and families that are devastated and broken hearted by the genetic diseases that plague so many puppies. To sum things up... there are many breeders who will do the very least they can when it comes to breeding and there are those who do everything in their power in their breeding practices. You make up your own mind. We always tell people You can adopt a $750.00 shorkie puppy and have $3000.00 in medical bills! Will the cheap price you paid be worth the emotional cost in the end..
