Cockatoos are native to Australia and some islands in the South Pacific. They are social birds and live in large flocks (families). They rely heavily on their flock or family members for comfort and security. Cockatoos come in a variety of species such as the Moluccan (Peach colored), Umbrella (white), Sulphur Crested (white with yellow crest), Goffin, and Bare-Eyed. Cockatoos are known for their strong bond with their owner and their shrill calls morning and again at night. They do not make great apartment dwellers because of their loud calls. These calls are to locate their family members. Keep in mind that your Cockatoo instinctively will call (loudly) to keep track of you. Once your Cockatoo has bonded with you, he will want your constant attention. It is best to be constant with your attention time. If you give attention erratically, your Cockatoo will always ask for more. Cockatoos are avid chewers. Your furniture looks very enticing to a Cockatoo. Be sure to provide many challenging toys such as ropes, toys with hidden treats, and wood chews. If you are an allergy sufferer, you may not want to pick a Cockatoo. These birds are covered in a fine talcum powder to keep their feathers healthy. When you pick-up a Cockatoo your hands will be covered in the powder. Cockatoos are not known for their great talking abilities, but are able to master a couple of words. They are best known for their antics of dancing, flapping and fluffing.
